The defence room is quiet until your supervisor introduces you. Then the external examiner leans forward and asks the first question. Your slides are neat. Your outfit is fine. What matters now is whether you can explain your own project without reading every bullet word for word.
Nigerian final year project defences vary by faculty, but the pattern is familiar across public and private universities. You present for ten to twenty minutes. Panelists ask questions. You respond. Someone may score you on content, composure, and how well your written thesis matches your oral answers.

What the defence is trying to prove
Examiners are not trying to embarrass you. They are certifying that the thesis on the table is yours, that the methods are defensible, and that the conclusions follow from the evidence.
They check four things:
- Ownership: Did you do the work and understand it?
- Alignment: Do chapters one through five tell one coherent story?
- Method fit: Is your analysis appropriate for your questions and data?
- Contribution: What did this project add beyond copying an old topic?
If your written work is weak, questions will expose gaps. If your writing is strong but you cannot explain it orally, they will still hesitate to pass you confidently. Prepare both the document and the conversation.

Opening questions about your topic and motivation

State geography, population, time frame, and what you excluded.
"How is this topic relevant to Nigeria today?"
Connect to current policy, campus life, industry pressure, or social debate. Generic answers about "the world at large" sound unprepared.
Practice a ninety-second introduction that covers topic, problem, objectives, and method. Many students burn five minutes on background slides and leave no time for findings.
Methodology questions examiners love
Chapter Three pays off here. If you cannot defend how you collected and analysed data, every later question wobbles.
"What research design did you use and why?"
Survey, experimental, case study, ethnography, action research. Name it and justify fit with your objectives.
"What is your population and sample size? How did you select respondents?"
State N, sampling technique, and inclusion criteria. If you used convenience sampling, say so honestly.
"What instrument did you use? How did you validate it?"
Questionnaire, interview guide, lab protocol. Mention pilot testing, Cronbach alpha for scales, or expert review if applicable.
"What ethical steps did you take?"
Departmental approval, informed consent, anonymity, data storage.
"Why this statistical test and not another?"
Common in quantitative defences. Link test to variable type and assumptions.
"Did you test assumptions before running inferential statistics?"
Normality, homogeneity, expected cell counts. If you skipped a check, explain why or admit the limit.

Data and analysis challenges
Examiners drill into Chapter Four because numbers are easy to verify.
"Walk us through your main finding."
Pick the result that answers your central objective. Reference a table or chart by number.

Contribution and originality
Undergraduate originality is modest but real. Examiners want a clear statement of what you added.
"What is the contribution of your study?"
Empirical data on an under-studied campus, tested model in a new context, framework for local practitioners.
"How does your work differ from previous projects in this department?"
Avoid claiming global novelty. Local context and updated data count.
"If you had six more months, what would you improve?"
Larger sample, mixed methods, longitudinal design, more sites.
"What is the practical implication of your findings?"
Tie to recommendations in Chapter Five.
"Summarise your project in one sentence."
Prepare this in advance. Hesitation here unsettles the room.
Limitations and future research
Almost every Nigerian defence includes limitation questions. Write answers before you enter the room.
"What are the limitations of your study?"
Sample size, single site, self-report bias, time constraints, instrument limits.
"Can we generalise your findings?"
Answer within scope. Do not claim national representativeness from one faculty unless your design supports it.
"What future research do you recommend?"
Mirror Chapter Five but be ready to expand orally.
"Did COVID or other disruptions affect your data collection?"
Many projects since 2020 need a honest note here.
Admitting limits with composure scores higher than pretending the study is flawless.
Tricky or hostile-sounding questions
Not every examiner is warm. Some push hard to see how you think under pressure.
"Did you write this yourself?"
Explain your process: proposal approval, data collection, analysis, drafting chapters, supervisor feedback.
"This looks like a downloaded project."
Point to local data, your institution, your survey dates, your unique tables.
"Your objectives do not match your findings."
Show the mapping objective by objective. Fix mismatches in the thesis before defence if you spot them earlier.
"Why should we pass you?"
Summarise competence, effort, contribution, and lessons learned. Stay professional, not defensive.
"I disagree with your conclusion."
Engage respectfully. Offer evidence. It is acceptable to say "That is a fair critique within the limits of the sample."
If you truly do not know an answer, say you did not explore that aspect and note it as future work. Inventing statistics destroys trust.

Slides, demo, and room logistics
Questions also arise from what you show, not only what you wrote.
"Your slide says X but Chapter Four says Y."
