What Correct with AI is for

The core flow in four steps

The same pattern appears across workspaces:

  1. Select text in the TipTap editor
  2. Click Correct with AI in the toolbar
  3. Type an instruction and Add to queue
  4. Open the queue and run Fix all when you are satisfied with the list

Each queued item is one anchored edit. The system remembers where the text lived in your document so the replacement lands in the right place.

If one item fails, the others can still run. Failed items stay in the queue with a notice so you can retry or edit manually.

Step 1: Select text in TipTap

Roylithia Scribe uses TipTap as the chapter editor. Highlight the sentence, paragraph, or section you want to change.

Tips for better selections:

  • Select whole paragraphs when possible
  • Avoid cutting mid-citation if you can include the full sentence
  • If a paragraph mixes two ideas, split your edits into two queue items

The editor keeps a live markdown version of your document. That canonical text is what the server uses to anchor your selection.

Supervisor tip: When students send me random sentences without context, I cannot judge if the fix is correct. Edit paragraph by paragraph so the flow still makes sense.

Step 2: Open Correct with AI and write a clear instruction

After you select text, click Correct with AI. A modal opens. Write a short instruction the way you would brief a research assistant.

Weak instruction: "Make better."

Strong instruction: "Use formal academic tone. Keep the citation. Reduce to three sentences."

Strong instruction: "Fix grammar only. Do not change the statistics."

Clear instructions reduce back-and-forth and keep your meaning intact.

You can queue multiple items before running anything. That is useful when your supervisor left ten comments across a chapter.

Step 3: Add to queue and review the Changes tab

When you click Add to queue, the item appears in the Changes or Edits tab with your instruction and a preview of the selected excerpt.

The queue is your checklist. You can:

  • Add more selections from other parts of the chapter
  • Remove an item if you change your mind
  • Keep writing and queue later

Nothing hits the server for AI replacement until you run Fix all. That gives you control. You are not forced to accept a stream of surprise edits while you are still thinking.

Step 4: Run Fix all

When the queue is ready, click Fix all.

Behind the scenes Roylithia Scribe does something important before the first AI call:

  1. Flush the latest markdown from TipTap
  2. Save the document if it changed, so the server version matches your editor
  3. Lock autosave while AI edits are streaming
  4. Run queued edits one after another
  5. Save the final document and unlock autosave

That order prevents a common failure where autosave bumps the document version while AI is still working. If you ever see a stale document error, it usually means something else saved first. Refresh, reconcile, and try again.

Final year project and thesis chapters

In the Project workspace, open a chapter in the project viewer. Select text in TipTap, queue edits, and run Fix all when ready.

Projects use read and edit modes and keep their own undo snapshot model. Take a breath before large batch edits on a chapter you have not saved recently. The project viewer is powerful, but it expects you to respect chapter boundaries.

Lecture notes

In the Lecture notes workspace, the same TipTap toolbar gives you Correct with AI on note sections you are drafting or cleaning up.

Lecturers use this to turn rough teaching points into readable notes. Students use it to tidy personal study notes imported from class. Autosave on lecture notes respects the AI lock during Fix all, same as other workspaces.

Journal articles

The Journal article workspace uses the shared revision hook pattern. Canonical markdown comes from the live editor through useCanonicalMarkdownSource, and persistBeforeAiEdit runs before Fix all.

That means journal edits anchor against what you actually see in TipTap, not a stale copy from an old load.

Textbook chapters

The Textbook workspace applies Correct with AI per chapter. Open the chapter you are working on, select text, queue, and Fix all.

After batch edits on a textbook chapter, the editor remounts while a short lock overlay is visible so TipTap and the server stay aligned. Continue editing the next chapter only after the save completes.

What happens on the server

Each edit request sends an anchor with:

  • Start and end offsets in the document markdown
  • A hash of the selected text
  • The excerpt itself as a fallback
  • Your instruction
  • An idempotency key so retries do not double-apply

The API responds as a stream. Tokens arrive with replacement text. When the item finishes, the document version updates. If the selection drifted because you edited nearby text after queuing, you may get a stale selection notice. Re-select the text and queue again.

This is why Roylithia Scribe insists on saving canonical markdown before Fix all. Your anchor must match the database copy.

Common errors and what to do

Stale selection: You changed the paragraph after queuing. Remove the item, re-select fresh text, queue again.

Stale document: Another tab or autosave won the race. Reload the project, confirm your latest text is present, then retry Fix all.

Optimistic save conflict: Rare, but it means the document moved during streaming. Reload from server and reconcile. The platform tries to persist completed chapters before connections drop, but you should still verify.

Edit in progress: Another Fix all is already running. Wait for it to finish.

Roylithia note: If Fix all fails mid-queue, completed items may already be saved. Open the document, read the changes, and only re-run failed items.

Good instructions by chapter type

Chapter One background: "Keep Nigerian context. Formal tone. Do not change the cited year."

Literature review: "Synthesise these three sentences into one theme statement. Keep author names."

Methodology: "Clarify sampling procedure. Do not invent sample size."

Results: "Grammar only. Do not alter numbers or table labels."

Abstract: "Reduce to 250 words. Past tense. Keep objectives."

Match instruction to risk. High-risk sections need "grammar only" or "do not change data."

Correct with AI vs full chapter generation
