Chapter Three is where your project stops sounding like an essay and starts reading like research. Nigerian supervisors often say Chapter One shows intent, Chapter Two shows awareness, and Chapter Three shows whether you can actually execute.
This chapter answers the questions every examiner will ask: What did you study? Who did you study? How did you collect data? How did you analyse it? Why is that approach appropriate for your objectives?
If you write Chapter Three as a copy-paste template with wrong sample size, vague instruments, and no analysis plan, your defence will be painful even when your topic is strong.
Why methodology is not a formality
Some undergraduates treat Chapter Three as a box to tick. They pick "survey research" because a senior used it last year, or they write "questionnaire" without describing the actual questions, scale, or validation path.
Methodology is the contract between your objectives and your findings. Chapter Four must deliver what Chapter Three promises.
Your methodology chapter should align with three anchors:
- Problem and objectives from Chapter One
- Theoretical and empirical context from Chapter Two
- The data you can realistically collect within your timeline, budget, and access constraints
Supervisor tip: Before you finalise Chapter Three, ask yourself whether you can defend every sentence in a room full of lecturers. If you cannot explain why you chose stratified sampling over simple random sampling for your study, change the text or change the method.
Research design and philosophy
Start with your research design. Common undergraduate designs in Nigeria include:
- Descriptive survey research for attitudes, perceptions, and practices
- Correlational research for relationships between variables
- Quasi-experimental or experimental designs for before-and-after or treatment comparisons where feasible
- Case study research for in-depth institutional or organisational analysis
- Content analysis for media, policy documents, or communication materials
- Mixed methods where qualitative insight supports quantitative patterns
State whether your study is quantitative, qualitative, or mixed. Then name the design clearly in one paragraph.
Some faculties also expect a brief note on research philosophy: positivism, interpretivism, or pragmatism. Do not borrow heavy postgraduate language you cannot defend. A short, honest paragraph is enough at undergraduate level unless your department requires more.
Connect design to objectives explicitly. Example pattern: "Because Objective 3 seeks to determine the relationship between training frequency and employee performance, a correlational survey design is adopted."

Population, sample, and sampling technique
Examiners look closely at this section. Define your population precisely: all registered small businesses in a LGA, all 400-level students in a faculty, all nurses in selected primary health centres, all customers of a particular service platform, and so on.
Then define your sample and sample size. Your size should be justified, not guessed. For many survey projects, departments accept common rules such as Krejcie and Morgan tables or a stated minimum based on similar studies in Chapter Two.
Name your sampling technique:
- Simple random sampling
- Stratified random sampling
- Purposive sampling
- Convenience sampling
- Snowball sampling
- Cluster sampling
Be honest. Convenience sampling is common in Nigerian undergraduate research because of access limits. If you use it, explain why and acknowledge the limitation. Pretending you used random sampling when you handed questionnaires to friends in your hostel creates defence risk.
Include inclusion and exclusion criteria. Who qualified to participate? Who was left out and why?
For qualitative studies, justify information saturation or the number of interviews based on similar projects and practical constraints.
Data collection instruments
Your instrument section must be specific.
For questionnaires, describe:
- Sections of the questionnaire
- Types of items: demographic, Likert-scale, multiple choice, open-ended
- Scale labels, for example 1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree
- Source of items: adapted from prior validated instruments or self-developed from literature
If you adapted an instrument, mention the original author and what you changed. If you developed your own, explain how items were derived from objectives and literature.
For interviews, state whether they are structured, semi-structured, or unstructured. Include interview duration, recording method, and how confidentiality will be handled.
For observation, describe the setting, observation checklist, and whether participation is covert or overt. Follow ethical norms. Covert observation is rarely appropriate for undergraduate projects without strong supervision.
For document analysis, list document types, selection criteria, and coding approach.
Attach your instrument in the appendix if your department requires it. Reference the appendix inside Chapter Three.
Supervisor tip: I want to see a draft questionnaire or interview guide before I approve your methodology chapter. A methodology section with no instrument attached is incomplete.
Validity and reliability
Undergraduate projects in the social sciences often include a subsection on validity and reliability.
Validity asks whether the instrument measures what it claims to measure. Mention content validity through expert review, or face validity through pilot testing with a small group.
Reliability asks whether the instrument produces consistent results. For quantitative scales, students sometimes report Cronbach's alpha after a pilot test. If you do not have pilot data yet, explain when piloting will occur and how you will handle weak items.
Do not invent statistical results. If Chapter Three is submitted before pilot testing, write the plan in future tense and update after data collection if your department allows.
Qualitative studies should discuss trustworthiness: credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Use terms your supervisor recognises, but keep explanations practical.
Data analysis plan
State how you will analyse data before you claim what you found. Chapter Three is the right place for this plan.
Quantitative examples:
- Descriptive statistics: frequencies, percentages, mean, standard deviation
- Inferential statistics: chi-square, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, regression
- Software: SPSS, Excel, R, STATA, or Python depending on your training
Qualitative examples:
- Thematic analysis
- Content analysis coding
- Narrative analysis for interview transcripts
Mixed methods: explain which analysis answers which objective, and whether integration happens at the interpretation stage.
Match analysis to data type. Do not promise regression if you only collected nominal yes-or-no answers without proper coding.

Ethical considerations in Nigerian research
Ethics is not only for medical research. Any project involving people needs an ethics subsection.
Cover these points where relevant:
- Informed consent and how participants were briefed
- Voluntary participation and the right to withdraw
- Confidentiality and anonymity in reporting
- Data storage and who can access raw responses
- Risk of harm and how you reduced it
If your university has a research ethics committee or faculty approval form, name it and state whether clearance was obtained or is in progress.
For interviews and surveys in workplaces, mention permission from management or school authorities when access was gated.
Nigerian students sometimes skip this section because "it is just a project." Examiners notice. A short, sincere ethics paragraph protects you.
Limitations of your chosen method
Every method has limits. Undergraduate research often faces:
- Small sample size
- Convenience sampling bias
- Self-report bias in questionnaires
- Limited geographic scope
- Short data collection window
- Dependence on one institution
State limitations clearly. This is not self-sabotage. It shows maturity. You are telling the reader how to interpret your findings.

Formatting Chapter Three for your department
Nigerian faculties use different outline labels. Common headings include:
- Research Design
- Area of Study
- Population of the Study
- Sample and Sampling Technique
- Instrumentation
- Validation of Instrument
- Method of Data Collection
- Method of Data Analysis
- Ethical Considerations
Some science and engineering projects use Materials and Methods with a different structure. Follow your departmental template exactly.
Keep numbering consistent with earlier chapters. If Chapter Two ends at 2.6, Chapter Three should not restart confusing sub-numbering unless your guide says so.
Use past tense if data collection is complete, present or future tense if Chapter Three is submitted as part of your proposal before fieldwork. Many Nigerian students write the proposal version first, then revise tenses after collection.
Linking methodology to Chapter Four
Chapter Three should end with a short transition that tells the reader what comes next: presentation of data, analysis, and discussion of findings in relation to objectives and literature.
Before you move to Chapter Four, run this alignment check:
- Each specific objective has a data source
- Each instrument section maps to at least one objective
- Sample description matches who you actually studied
- Analysis methods match your variable types
- Ethics and limitations are addressed honestly
If Chapter Two justified a conceptual framework with clear variables, Chapter Four should report results by those variables, not as a random list of charts.

Chapter Three is technical, but it is also fair. You are not expected to design a national study as an undergraduate. You are expected to design a coherent, feasible, and defensible study. Get that right and your project becomes much easier to finish.
